What is a dark age?

Manuscript of The Phoenix Principle and the Coming Dark Age.

Get a PDF version of The Phoenix Principle and the Coming Dark Age here.

Note that it takes a little time to load (i.e. wait a few seconds and the blurriness will resolve itself into legible text). You can either read it online or download it.

On my old Coming Dark Age site I have a page with the manuscript of the book in Word format, and I promised a PDF version. I have now seemingly lost the ability to FTP to that site (the ISP has changed hands several times). However, I have uploaded the PDF to Google Docs, and you can access it via the link above.

Future of Dark Age Watch

We are continuing the work of Dark Age Watch at two new sites, although we are not yet providing daily updates:

History and society: a presentation of dark age theory. This is intended to be a complete theoretical treatment of history, built up in stages.

(The new dark age watch: same concept as the old dark age watch. Sorry, nothing happening here at the moment.)

New York to follow London's example with congestion charge "Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, yesterday unveiled plans for a congestion charge on cars entering the busiest parts of Manhattan. Compared with London's £8, New York's proposed charge will be a snip at $8, around £4 at today's exchange rates." anti-organisation We do acknowledge that there is a severe problem in, say, China's and other large cities with pollution. Measures which intend to better the situation should be welcomed. Yet, from a dark age perspective, the move announced for New York heralds less not more movement, and hence stagnation rather than innovation (in order to overcome the problem).

India's first commercial rocket has been launched into space. "It is carrying a 352kg Italian satellite which will gather information about the origins of the universe, the AFP news agency reports. " Pro-organisation,The event implies a levelling of the playing field. Higher levels of economic prosperity have always been associated with a growth of a nation's military power. EU agrees Iran nuclear sanctions "The sanctions go further than those already agreed by the United Nations...The EU has agreed a total arms embargo, and added further people to the travel ban list - they are banned from the EU and their assets are frozen. " International cohesion insofar as the EU seems to be supporting the hegemon (US) by increasing the pressure on Iran.

Rolls-Royce to pull out of Sudan "Rolls, which supplies engines to oil firms in the country, said it would "progressively withdraw" from existing contracts and not seek new business." Internal disintegration-international disorganisation coupling

China about to become top carbon emitter "China will overtake the United States as the world’s biggest emitter of heat-trapping carbon dioxide (CO2) either this year or next, the International Energy Agency said on Wednesday." Internal organisation Admittedly, China's skies will not become any fresher in the short run.

Moscow foreign students told to stay in as racist attacks rise over Hitler's birthday "The students come from 82 countries - including Britain but mostly from Malaysia and India - and they live in a renovated 19th century block not far from campus. In recent years there has been a steep rise in the number of racist and xenophobic attacks across Russia. The victims are often migrant workers from former Soviet Union countries." Internal disintegration Cohesion may include elements of coercion and implies a strong pressure on the individual to conform to the values of a larger group. Yet, there is of course much more to it than knocking down people in the road. This story, it appears, is an example of shrinking horizons, and not one of societal and cultural revival.

US builds Baghdad wall to keep Sunnis and Shias apart "When the barrier is finished, the minority Sunni community of Adamiya, on the eastern side of the River Tigris, will be completely gated. Traffic control points manned by Iraqi soldiers will provide the only access, the US military said." Internal discohesion-disintegration coupling While the declared intent is to promote security, the fact that gated communities are developping is an indication that political authority is fragmented.

It's the cities, stupid About Organization This is an interesting article mentioning cities as centers of innovation and describing their relationships to nations and empires.

Update: the future of the dark age site.
I am working on a new site, which will subsume and extend the "dark age watch" concept. I expect it to be online in early April. Details will be announced here and by email to all those who contacted me at the time of discontinuation of this site.
The new site will be hosted on New Blogger, which, now I have found a way round the log-in problems, turns out to be powerful and attractive.

Nuclear review 'was misleading' "A High Court judge has ordered a rethink of the government's nuclear power plans, after a legal challenge by environmental campaigners Greenpeace...The government...stressed that the judge's ruling was on the "process of consultation, not the principle of nuclear power". " Internal disorganisation Innovation failure. Imagine the problems if the government tried actually to build a nuclear power station.

Piracy case collapses in Russia "A Russian court has thrown out a criminal case against a rural headteacher accused of using pirated Microsoft software in his school...Both Russian President Vladimir Putin and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev had publicly voiced support for Mr Ponosov." International disintegration America's law is rejected. There is also internal disorganisation coupling there.
